William Barnhill among first class of Union's Early Start Program

William Barnhill of Barbourville has been accepted to attend Union College for the fall semester of 2013 as part of of the new Early Start Program, which allows local high schoolers to earn college credit.

Barnhill will begin high school classes on Wednesday, Aug. 14 and will begin classes as a college student two weeks later at Union.

The Early Start Program is part of the Union Collegiate Institute and offers high schools students an opportunity to earn up to 29 credit hours while still in high school. Through the Knox County Board of Education, ESP students will take these classes free of charge. There were 41 applicants countywide, and 27 were accepted.

Located in Barbouville, Ky., Union College offers an educational experience where students receive personal attention to help make their educational experience successful. At Union, the average professor-to-student ratio is 14:1, so students can expect small class sizes and close interactions with instructors. Union is a four-year liberal arts school related to the United Methodist Church.
